I now read Christ’s being “lifted up” as image language echoing a passage in the letter to the Ephesians that speaks of God putting all things “under his feet” (Ephesians 1:22).
As a beautiful paraphrase puts it: God has put everything without exception into Christ’s power, and God appointed Christ as head of God’s household. The community is Christ’s body, and God fills the universe with the whole fullness of Christ’s vitality.
Thus, when I kneel down on the moist forest floor to look a trillium straight in the face, I see in it also Christ’s body, pulsating with aliveness.
