The reality of human society and acquisitiveness is such that the poor will always tend to be exploited; a society built on the competitive principle means that in order for there to be a winner, there must be a greater number of losers.
In such a society, where law and custom do not provide sufficient protection for the poor, and where religion is still given a place of real honor, the final sanction is God, and the judgment of God.
The character of God and the priorities of God are therefore of first importance. And in the Jewish Scriptures there is no room for doubt: God is the God of the poor.
