03187 – Fall in Love with Life

Too few people ever truly fall in love, which makes me sad. I think it could be because they are forever looking for the perfect partner who will finally rescue them and make them happy. They don’t realize that no one can “make you” happy. A person can wait their entire lives to find the perfect partner and die waiting.

Too few people ever truly fall in love. No, I don’t mean romantic love. I mean life. Too few people ever truly fall in love with life. They are forever looking for life to show up as the perfect partner, with all the proper characteristics, attributes and temperament. They want life to show up in some particular set of circumstances that finally rescue them and make them happy. They don’t realize that life can’t “make you” happy, and will spend all their years waiting for life to appear as the perfect mate.

Life is what you make it. To fall in love with life is to say “yes” to all of it, and then to learn what that “yes” means in every moment. To fall in love with life is to spot in all things the invitation to goodness, joy and perpetual becoming. To love life is to love her with all her paradoxes, inconsistencies, and absurdities. To fully and wholly take her as she is, not in spite of who that is but because of it. Sometimes you will be disappointed with life, quarrel with it, be hurt by it. No relationship is without its struggles. Life without struggle is not life at all, that would be death. To fall in love with life is not to wait for it to become beautiful but to make it beautiful.

People wonder what the meaning and purpose of life is. Consider that the meaning and purpose of life is to fall in love with it, to make life your one true love.
