At your funeral or at your 90th birthday they’re not going to say, “I am so grateful to him or her because he/she was happy.”

Living lovingly toward others will definitely have moments of happiness, but one might do well to understand that it is not the happy moments that are the point. The point is perhaps that someone lived, loved, was loved, felt loved, felt connected, laughed well, found a safe place to cry, found a partner in the things that give purpose and meaning, that any or all of these things were true because of you. Think about that. Live into that.
