04269 – What If…?

A Baptist preacher told this story to his congregation one Sunday:

When God walked into heaven and found everyone there, he decided it was too crowded. He owed it to justice, did he not, to reward those who were faithful? So, he had one of his angels read the ten commandments slowly, one by one. If they had broken any of the commandments, they were to dismiss themselves, and God, the Judge, would determine the degree of their punishment. They were warned not to fake it or their punishment would be more severe.

Well, when God looked around there was only one person left, a Baptist deacon. God couldn’t handle that so God commanded an angel to bring everyone back in. God said, “I have decided in my grace to let everyone in.” When the Baptist deacon heard this, he was enraged. “This is unjust,” he cried out. “Why didn’t you tell me this before?”

The Baptist preacher who told this story then asked his congregation the following question: What if everyone gets in? The good and evil, the righteous and unrighteous, Christians, Buddhists, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, atheists, everyone?

The preacher knew he would take some heat over this, but it was the next two questions that got him fired. He asked, “What if it’s not about who gets in at all? What if it’s all about human beings becoming like a God who lets everyone in?

On Monday the deacons and church council got together and made sure that preacher never preached another sermon.
