01145 – Love is about True Justice

To truly love is to work for a just equity of power between nations, races, and genders, and in our day-to-day relationships and transactions. It is to oppose all patterns of power over another.

This is why [Simone] Weil appeals again and again to the ancient symbol of the scales of justice, which represent a balance between one and the other. In the scales that Lady Justice holds, if there is inequity the scales tip in one direction or the other.

This is as true in our most intimate relationships as it is in the great affairs of nations.

Love is never about one partner dominating the other. True justice is never about coercing the other. It is only truly attained when the two are able to say yes to each other and to conjoin in ways that honor each other. That, says Weil, is why true love and true justice require consent.
