00483 – Vast Possibilities of God Images

Although taking the risk of openness to new experiences with God can be scary, we will find the resulting growth in faith rewarding and exhilarating.

The commandment against worshiping idols includes more than physical statues. We create an idol when we become set in the way we picture and speak about God. Anything that becomes carved in our minds as an unalterable concept of God is an idol.

Although the Bible pictures God as Father, it gives us a wide variety of other pictures. If we insist on imagining and speaking of God only in masculine terms, we have created God in the image of a masculine human being and have thus broken the commandment against making graven images (Exodus 20: 4).

Reclaiming other biblical images of God opens our minds and hearts to the vast possibilities of God.
