00579 – A Congregation Worships

The idea of “sacred space” is important [for worship]. The word “sanctuary” implies safety, shelter, and protection.

A worship space communicates an otherness, but also a haven where individuals can come into acceptance, reflection, and space.

A congregation is in “inaudible dialogue” simply by the space it provides and the visual, auditory (or silent!), olfactory, tactile, and even taste sensations (ex., Lord’s Supper) worshipers experience.

Communion literally means “in common.” …Our koinonia means a fellowship that is deeper than mere socializing among people who are similar. The common faith,…our common hope bring us together. Part of this commonness, however, is in the sharing of our burdens. “Bear one another’s burdens…” (Gal. 6:2), wrote Paul.

…Worship can give voice and lend comfort to the anxieties and fears of people through responsive readings, pastoral prayers, or even in the simple repetition of liturgy.
