00835 – How Shall Musicians Image God?

We image God in the music we make and perform. When the program is hit-or-miss, we show forth a God who lacks purpose and direction;…when our performance of music lacks vitality or artistic grace, we portray God as inert; when our musical choices revolve around taste rather than value, God is seen as indulgent and lacking objective standards; and, above all, when the music we choose lacks creativity in the full sense, we image forth a God of “creative” mediocrity.

The church musician must take note, for there is no getting around the fact that our actions speak louder than our words. The question each church musician faces is not, “Shall I image God?” but, “What image will be set forth?”
